Babies that are moved around often are happier. If they do nothing but lie in the crib they get bored. But, if you give them time in the crib, then move them to the playpen, with a stint on a floor blanket, they stay calmer and happier. A blanket on the floor is a classic favorite of most babies but your baby doesn’t have to have an ordinary floor blanket. He or she deserves much more than that! It’s easy for you to make a play mat for your baby that features colorful images and pictures.
Have you ever purchased a sheet set in a giant zipper bag? One of those clear, plastic bags made of thick vinyl? Those are perfect for creating the play mat pictures. If you don’t have such a bag you can purchase the clear vinyl at most department stores, craft stores and home improvement retailers.
Use a thin blanket to make the play mat. It can be a piece of hemmed fabric or a particular type of blanket. Knitted blankets, fake fur types or any blanket with small or large holes in them are not useable as the play mat. The blanket should be large enough to accommodate the baby as well as the pictures, which will go around the perimeter of the play mat.
Lay the blanket out on a flat surface. Use a small paper plate as the pattern for the pictures. Draw around it, over and over again, to create circles that go around the perimeter of the blanket. These can be butted together to create one look or you can leave large spaces between them to create a different design.
Decide what you want to put on each circle. Think color, variety and fun. Place a handful of beads on one circle, a cup of glitter on another. After you’ve added what you want to each area cut circles of the thick plastic. These should be cut to be an inch or so larger than the circles on the blanket. Make sure none of the materials are touching the outline of the circles and use hot glue to attach the plastic circles, covering the items inside. If you want, you can then trim around each circle with lace, ribbon or other materials.
Some things you can put inside the circles include a small, flat stuffed animal or doll, a picture of the family, lengths of curled ribbon, colorful fabric, foil or gift wrap, Styrofoam beads, confetti, a doily, or even a plastic animal. Look around at craft stores and dollar-theme stores for miniatures that will look great. Your baby will love this play mat that’s unique and really easy to make!
