Crazy Taxi is one of the all-time great arcade video games. I remember playing it on my Sega Dreamcast when I was a lad. I spent hours driving around picking up those crazy customers, now I can do it all over again, as Crazy Taxi has just been ported, and will be one of the best Playstation 3 downloads..
You Hailed For a Cab?
The game has not changed much in this PlayStation port. There are there are 4 different drivers to choose from in the game, each with their own wheels and personality, which adds some variety to the game! There are also a lot of hidden cab drivers and hidden taxi’s for you to acquire as you progress through the game.
The world of Crazy Taxi is set across two huge cities. In the original, Sega had the licensing for Levi’s stores, KFC and various other well known retailers. Unfortunately in this port, those locations are gone and have been replaced with generic locations. Your customer will want to be taken to one of these locations, and they will generally give you less than a minute to get there. The goal is to race across town, drop them off, and then find another customer as quickly as possible. When the timer finally runs out, your earnings are added up and you are given a rating of your performance
Game Modes in Crazy Taxi
There are three modes of play in the Crazy Taxi on the PS3, Original, Arcade, and Crazy Box. In Arcade mode you have a time clock that ticks down. Every time you deliver a passenger to their destination, your clock gets replenished. The idea, well deliver as many passengers as you can before your time runs out.
Original mode is slightly different. You have 4 time options to choose from. A 3 minute run, 5 minute run and 10 minute run. During those set times, you once again have to pick up and deliver your customers where they want to go. The goal, deliver as many customers as you can in the specified time and earn as much money as possible before the clock runs out.
If you get bored of ferrying people around the two cities, then you can play Crazy Box mode. Crazy Box offers various mini games, each aimed at honing your skills in order for you to progress in the main game. More mini challenges become unlocked as you complete the first stages, but be warned – they do get a lot harder as you go on and some are painstakingly difficult to complete! But you will keep on coming back to get those tasks finished!
How long will it last you? To be honest, there’s no real task to complete in the main Arcade and Original modes, the only compelling feature bringing you back to play again is the shear addictiveness that overflows in Crazy Taxi. This game will keep you coming back for more, trying to beat those scores and times, although it’s just a one player game, Crazy Taxi will last a very long time! The game is a rare jewel that you can just pick up and play, for hours on end!
The Graphics in Crazy Taxi on the Sony PlayStation 3 are good. They have been updated to high definition, with lush, bright colors and varied scenery. The only annoyance is that pop-up is still evident, just as it was on the Dreamcast. It is quite frustrating when you suddenly hit a Semi that just appeared out of nowhere! This can be incredibly annoying at times and isn’t really necessary at all, when you consider the power of the Play Station 3. Saying that though, the game moves along at a blistering pace! You can have hundreds of objects on the screen at once and there will not be any slow down at all!
Although the graphics on the Playstation 3 might be a little rough around the edges, and the occasional glitch here and there can be annoying, the graphics overall are good and they do their job just fine!
The Crazy Sound
The sound in Crazy Taxi on the Sony PlayStation 3 is good. The sound track used to be one of the greatest features, but Sega could not get the licenses for the same bands as before, which is a huge shame because Offspring and Bad Religion were a perfect fit for this game. There are tons of tracks though from various punk rockers but it is just not the same. There are your usual tire screeches and bangs when you hit other objects and you do get the occasional remark spoken to you from your passenger! Overall the sound is good!
The controls are are extremely easy to learn! Accelerate, Brake, Reverse, then you use the analog sticks to steer your car left or right! Pretty simple really! The game does feature wacky physics, when you go over a hill, you literally fly, and cars just simply bounce off of you when you collide with them. Thankfully though, the insane physics only help the game, it fits into the style of the game perfectly. I love the arcade feel to the controls it really adds a lot to the whole experience of playing Crazy Taxi
Crazy Taxi – Overall
The Gameplay is excellent. The cities are huge, you will always find new things, and this contributes the playability of the game. This is an easy game to pick up and play. It is incredibly addictive and you will just keep on coming back for more. It is just such a huge shame that the original soundtrack and locations could not be included. Crazy Taxi is still without doubt, one of the greatest arcade games of all time! You would be crazy not to get it. It is available for download now on the PlayStation Network and it is priced at $9.99.
