Carolyn Cole and Pia Sawhney, filmmakers with the Fulton Ferry based production company Mediastorm have produced a short documentary called Roots in the Garden which focuses on the lives of the long time residents of Carroll Gardens and how gentrification has irreversibly altered the life and soul of the neighborhood they once loved.
The story is told in the words of old timers and Italian Americans who grew up in the area, it poignantly recalls the neighborhood they knew for generations and its flavor; the family run shops, traditional haunts and poor immigrant communities who settled and raised families here.
The older residents now struggle to cope, finding their way of life supplanted by the brutal wrecking ball of gentrification and the invasion of young urban professionals who live life at a different pace. Roots in the Garden portrays the harsh reality that has changed the cultural landscape of this area forever.
