The good thing about making a pole-type playhouse for your cat is that he or she will have years of fun playing in it. The bad thing is you may never see your cat again! The playground for cats consists of ordinary cardboard boxes that can be used for sleeping, playing or hiding. What else could a cat ask for?
The pole you use can be a metal pole or even cardboard tubes. Attach a metal pole with hardware on the ceiling and the floor after first attaching the boxes. If you’re using cardboard tubes tape them together to make a pole long enough to reach from the ceiling to the floor. If it doesn’t quite reach you can use a different technique to stand it. Turn a bowl upside-down and wedge the tubes between the ceiling and the bowl. Paint the tubes or use them as-is.
Choose the boxes you want to use for the playhouse. They don’t have to be all the same size but can be if you want. Cover the boxes in carpeting, fabric, fake fur or even paper. Each box should have the flaps or lid removed. With the box opening facing you cut a hole in the top and bottom to make way for the pole. It’s important that you make the holes just large enough for the pole to fit tightly. Make a different version by leaving the flaps or lid in place. Glue the flaps down or lid on to the box. Cut a hole in the middle to create the opening for the box. Cats will love this design which gives them a little more privacy.
Slide as many boxes onto the pole as you want but leave spaces between each one. When each box is in its position use colored tape to wrap around and around the pole. This will keep the boxes from sliding on the pole. Turn the boxes at different angles so all the openings don’t face the same way.
You can make each box serve a particular purpose, if you want. For example, place a pillow in one box to make it a sleeper. Use staples or glue to hang ribbon pieces, with toys dangling from them, in another box. Your cat will have the time of his life in his new playhouse. You’ll just have to hope he comes out every once in awhile to visit you!
