Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas cannot seem to remove himself from the public eye over allegations that he sexually harassed Anita Hill almost 20 years ago. Hill made a statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee that should have remained confidential. The FBI investigated but found that the accusation was inconclusive. The story was inconveniently and illegally leaked just days before Thomas was confirmed by the Senate into his current position nearly 10 years after the alleged incident.
It has now been nearly 20 years, and Virginia Thomas, Clarence’s wife, has unearthed the past. According to CBS News, earlier this month, Virginia left a message for Hill requesting an apology from her. It’s been almost two decades since the alleged incident; when will it be over with?
The Court of Public Opinion
The re-opening of events from nearly 20 years ago in the Clarence Thomas case is unfortunate for the Supreme Court Justice. One day, he may live these allegations down, but the same cannot be said for United States President Bill Clinton. It is nearly considered common knowledge that there was a sex scandal between President Clinton and his 22-year-old intern at the time, Monica Lewinsky.
The Sunday Times explains that Clinton was under investigation for previous acts of sexual harassment at the time the Lewinsky case was revealed. Paula Jones accused Clinton of sexual harassment years earlier, which led to the questioning of White House staff. Lewinsky signed an affidavit denying any personal relationship with the president, and a friend of Lewinsky saw it as her civic duty to point out this wrongdoing, even if it was by a friend. This threw the media into a frenzy, as it was confirmed that Clinton had sexual relations not only with the two women in question, but also many before and even more afterward. President Clinton was put through the impeachment process and was nearly ejected from office.
How We Remember Our 42nd President
Whitehouse.Gov shed a very positive light on the Clinton presidency. The United States was led by Bill Clinton through an extended duration of peace and the best economic conditions that the U.S. has ever seen. He was our president when inflation and unemployment were both low and stable. He even created a budget surplus, which now seems an impossibility.
Although all these amazing things were completed during Clinton’s term, he will also be remembered for his scandalous actions. It will be marked in history books as the time a president was forced through impeachment proceedings. It is not something that can be lived down, but something etched in stone that will never be forgotten.
