Back in 2009, things were going pretty good for Posche, as its 911 sports car was still a hit with enthusiasts, the Cayman and Boxster were popular in the entry-level segments while the Cayenne SUV was breaking sales records left and right. At that time, the German company decided to implement a huge change, and revealed to the world the Porsche Panamera sedan.
Reactions were pretty polarizing, to say the least. Enthusiasts declared it a blasphemy, another betrayal after the introduction of the Cayenne. The media declared its design to be extremely bad, especially in the rear side, looking as it someone just increased the length of a 911.
Even so, the new super sedan, as it would be called, paved the way for Aston Martin to introduce the Rapide, and other companies to quickly announce plans of a ‘Panamera killer’.
Now, as further testimony to the success which is the Panamera, Porsche has revealed that in the first year of production, 22,518 units of its four-door grand tourer were sold all around the world.
“Our corporate strategy of value-oriented growth has proven itself to be a successful model: With the Panamera, Porsche has clearly positioned itself with the sportiest automobile in the high-end and luxury-class market and achieves already a 13 percent share of its segment today,” summarized Bernhard Maier, Member of the Management Board for Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG.
Porsche also released a few interesting statistics about the sales of the Panamera. The city with the most Panameras ordered is Los Angeles, USA, with 890 vehicles roaming the streets and highways of Southern California. New York closely follows with 760 units sold. The Panamera was also extremely successful in Asia, with Hong Kong, Tokyo and Shanghai leading the way. As you can expect, the Middle East is also up there, with 285 units being delivered in Dubai. Total German sales are at 2,530 Panamera models, highlighting that the car is loved by its native country.
Further breaking down the sales, the Porsche Panamera 4S is the best seller, with 9,394 vehicles delivered worldwide. The top of the range Panamera Turbo is next, with 6,171, followed by the Panamera S, with 4,563.
Sales are no doubt going to increase though, entry level V6 Panamera model has just been launched onto the global market for just a few weeks. In that time, 2,390 vehicles were already delivered to eager customers all around the world. It is expected that it will become the most popular version in the following months.
Currently, the Porsche Panamera can be ordered in three versions: a standard 296 HP one with a 3.6-liter V6, the Panamera S with a 394 HP 4.8-liter V8, and the Panamera Turbo, with a 493 HP twin-turbo 4.8-liter V8. All of them can be ordered with standard rear- or all-wheel drive, as indicated by the 4 at the end of the name.
Recently, we revealed the new Porsche Panamera Personalization Porgram. This included a variety of new accessories and customization options for the regular super sedans. The Panamera Turbo also received a PowerKit option, which increased the power output by 40 HP, delivering the best performance for the four-door grand tourer.
