The Powerball numbers have played second fiddle lately. Yet the Powerball numbers are now worth a considerable amount, while Mega Millions is back to square one. Last week, Mega Millions finally gave away $140 million, leaving its rival lottery game to take the spotlight for a while. After last night’s drawing, it may now have an even bigger jackpot to give away shortly. Since no one hit the Powerball numbers last night, $123 million is now at stake for Saturday night.
Once Mega Millions finally ended its month-long drought of winners last week, Powerball’s drought finally took center stage. Since no one hit last Saturday, last night’s drawing officially crossed the $100+ million milestone, and will now climb even higher.
The latest Powerball numbers were 34, 38, 39, 45 and 50, with the Powerball at 33 and the Power Play at 2. Yet again, no player was able to get the first five numbers and the Powerball, leaving the $104 million grand prize unclaimed.
This means that the next drawing will be worth $123 million on Saturday night, which makes things even more interesting. In another week or two, the grand prize could reach even greater heights, and perhaps get closer to $200 million soon enough.
No one has won the game since September 18, when someone from Georgia hit Powerball numbers that were worth $116 million. Now that the current jackpot has surpassed that mark, interest stands to get even higher.
The grand prize has crossed the $200+ million mark twice in 2010, as $211.7 was won in March, and $258.5 was claimed in April. This current drought is nowhere near that kind of wealth yet, although it is starting to be within range.
A few players could have broken the Powerball numbers drought last night, yet they fell just short. Only four players hit the first five numbers, with one each in Florida and Michigan, and two in New Jersey. But without the Powerball, they were only able to win $250,000 each.
Since Mega Millions is starting from scratch again after last week, this is the big lottery story in town. The jackpot has already had a $19 million increase following last night, so if no one hits next time, it could have an even bigger rise for next Wednesday.
But first, players will try again to hit the Powerball numbers on Saturday, with $123 million now on the line.
