I was given a pair of argyle knee-highs yesterday. Actually two pairs, they were on sale; my husband remembered how much I liked them. This is what happens when you have been together going on three decades.
Luckily he wasn’t too far off on the style charts though. The September issue of Glamour magazine has a page dedicated to the proper way to pull off preppy. Whether or not you wore this yuppy chic style ‘back in the day’ or if it is brand new to you, there are unspoken rules of how to wear these classic items.
Oxford shirts: In 2010 wear this classic piece untucked and not buttoned up to the top. Layer with a sweater vest to tone down the crisp stiffness of the fabric. A cardigan can be layered over top if you are not ready to jump into a sweater vest. A colorful low V-neck top can also be worn over a white button-down shirt.
Argyle Sweaters: Preppy pattern at its best. Pair a well-fitting sweater with classic pants, walking shorts or a pair of standard jeans. Don’t mix patterns or styles when donning this iconic casual piece. Leave the flowy skirts, mini skirts and shoes from the wrong era in your closet for another day.
Polo shirts: Ivy League college chic at its finest. Men can find a collection of colorful, easy to wear polos in any department store this fall. Pair with classic chino pants, dark denims or Bermuda shorts for a preppy look that has yet to fade from fashion.
Jewelry: Accessorize your preppy look with an heirloom-looking piece of jewelry. A large brooch, chunky chain, or strand of pearls can tie the preppy look together. One piece that you love is really all you need. Make it your signature piece of jewelry and it takes on a life of it’s own.
College Chic Accessories: Colorful scarves, like the ones from Old Navy can bring color and fashion flair to a preppy look. Satchels, messenger bags or a small and neat backpack can hold all your essentials. If you want to go more authentic and retro, carry a Bermuda bag with a wooden handle and a reversible fabric cover. As for those argyle knee high socks, I say if you are old enough to have worn them the first time around, they are a fashion don’t. But, I will wear them under a pair of jeans with my clunky clogs. Talk about cozy!
