President Obama is continuing his cross country trek of casual backyard chats with ordinary Americans suffering from the current economic woes. This time he made a stop in Miami where he raised money, had his ordinary backyard talk at Alonso Mourning’s estate, and stopped for some Cuban hamburgers at a local treasure El Mago de la Frita in West Miami.
The Miami Herald reports that Obama was in town to support Boca Raton Democrat Ron Klein. Obama was also met by U.S. Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Ted Deutch, Democratic Senate contender Kendrick Meek, and Congressional candidate Joe Garcia.
These talks are important for Obama and the Democratic Party, with national polls showing the mass discontent among American voters about the current economic situation. However, given that these talks are targeted toward the ordinary American suffering from economic troubles, maybe having a causal talk in the backyard of a former NBA superstar was not the best idea. Poor Alonso Mourning must just be scraping by with a 12,000 ft home on Biscayne Bay, which at $12.75 million was considered one of the most expensive homes ever purchased in the U.S. at the time.
Yet, The Los Angeles Times reports that ordinary Americans still flocked to the low key backyard straight shooter talk dropping $1,000 for the reception, $5,000 for a meal, and $17,600 for a photo op with our down to earth ordinary president. Yes, this is the same down to earth president who just recently said in a town hall meeting that he would rather put his children in a very elite private school over a good public institution. Average Joe clearly must have been in attendance with reasonably ordinary prices and standards like those.
According to The Los Angeles Times, amidst a crowd of ordinary politicians and professional athletes, Obama admitted that when he spent $750 million on his ordinary presidential campaign that he did not know how badly the economy was doing. “So,” he said, “my first job coming into office was to make sure that we stabilize the economy.” Millions of the ordinary Americans that constitute the current 9.6% unemployment rate will be glad to know that the recession is officially over thanks to Obama.
Despite the president’s failure of hosting an ordinary event or acknowledging that the average American is still struggling, he did attempt to make up for it by getting a taste of local culture. NBC Miami reports that Obama visited the family owned restaurant El Mago de las Fritas for some Cuban style hamburgers. I wonder what the First Lady would think about such an unhealthy meal.
