President Obama recently taped an appearance for an episode of the Discovery Channel’s hit series ‘Mythbusters.’ In the episode, scheduled to air December 8, President Obama asks show hosts and special effects gurus, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, to build the Archimedes Death Ray-based upon the dubious legend that Archimedes used parabolic mirrors to set fire to an advancing Roman fleet during the Siege of Syracuse.
The legend has been tested twice before on ‘Mythbusters.’ However, President Obama put in a special request to have the legend tested once again.
In a White House press release, President Obama stated his disappointment that he “didn’t get to blow anything up…I was a little frustrated about that.”
The ‘Mythbusters’ hosts, Adam and Jamie, were part of President Obama’s “Educate to Innovate” event this past fall. The event kicked off President Obama’s campaign for science, technology, engineering, and math awareness (or STEM).
Earlier this year President Obama directed $250 million for math and science education-hoping to improve US students declining rankings in academic performance.
Discovery Communications, which owns the Discovery Channel, has launched its own agenda to encourage children and young adults to participate in math and science programs. Discovery Communications launched “Be the Future” earlier this year. The program supplies commercial-free programming for kids on its network the Science Channel.
The ‘Mythbusters’ episode featuring President Obama will premier December 8th at 9PM ET/PT on the Discovery Channel.
