The feeding frenzy has begun! Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their engagement Nov. 16, and the media spotlight is going to be shining on them until that big wedding day — and long beyond.
Prince William and Middleton answered questions for the media at St. James Palace in London on Tuesday, according to CBS News. They gave some details on the engagement, such as that William proposed last month while on a safari in Kenya. He also gave her his mother’s, Princess Diana, engagement ring, which is an 18-carat ring with a blue sapphire in the middle, surrounded by smaller diamonds. The royal family was mum about the exact date of the wedding, but said it would be sometime next year.
No other celebrity engagement even comes close to the media whirlwind that has been seen over the last two days. Media speculation on when the engagement would happen has been going on for years. The only couple that had even come close to this kind of media attention was the engagement and wedding of Chelsea Clinton. Her engagement to Marc Mezinsky was announced in November of 2009, and right from the start, the media were after the big scope of the details of the impending wedding. Almost every country around the world reported the news of the big engagement. Families such as the Kennedys and the Clintons are America’s version of the royal family, and that is why no Hollywood celebrity engagement could even compare to Chelsea’s engagement.
The wedding of Mezinsky and Clinton was even more of an event, with photographers camping out at the rumored location, Rhinebeck, New York, according to The Washington Post. They were even trying to work out the details from guests of the wedding, who admittedly were kept in the dark about even the location themselves. The whole weekend leading up to the wedding was marked with paparazzi following the Clintons’ every moves, from the rehearsal dinner to the wedding after-party. It was truly the event of the year for the United States.
After all of the media craziness subsided, Marc Mezinsky and Chelsea Clinton have been all but out of the media spotlight. However, this will not be the case for Prince William and Kate Middleton, who even after their wedding will always be a major topic in the media. The news of a baby will be the next thing the media speculate about.
