This year Starbucks has the holiday drink trifecta… bringing you the Gingerbread Latte, the brand new Caramel Brulee and the returning Peppermint Mocha. Each has an individual holiday flavor with the unique taste and quality Starbucks is known for. Let’s find out exactly how good the Peppermint Mocha is.
I have now tried all three drinks, which are all amazing, but the Peppermint Mocha adds a little something extra. Unlike the Gingerbread Latte which is a very mild, almost-not-there flavor, and the Caramel Brulee that shocks your taste buds, the Peppermint Mocha falls somewhere in the middle.
Made with a signature espresso, steamed milk, bittersweet chocolate and a peppermint flavored syrup, the Peppermint Mocha is like Winter in a cup. It just screams it with every sip. Plus you get whipped cream and dark chocolate curls on top! Everything is better with chocolate curls.
It’s time to discuss how very bad this delicious drink is for you. I doubt you’re surprised, since all the best things in life are fattening, but that’s why it’s a season delight. For a grande (16 oz.) Peppermint Mocha Latte you will be packing away 400 calories, 15g of fat and 60g of carbohydratess! If those numbers scare you out of your Uggs, you can always make it a little better for you by skipping the whipped cream and substituting 2% milk for non-fat milk. By doing this you have just gone from 400 calories to a mere 280 calories! It may be worth it to you if you know you can make it nearly half the calories and fat it once was just by changing the milk.
Cost VS Quailty
With every Starbucks review I like to weigh the cost versus the quality. We all know Starbucks is better quality, but we also know we are paying extra for it. Yes you can brew coffee at home and buy the peppermint syrup and try to make it yourself, but aside from the rewarding feeling you get that you just made your own peppermint mocha drink, it just isn’t the same. It’s really up to you whether or not you think $4.45 for a 16oz. coffee cup full of deliciousness is worth it to you, it was for me!
The Peppermint Mocha Frapp
If you prefer the blended frappucinos, you can also get your fix! Starbucks also makes their Peppermint Mocha in a frappuccino, with the only different being milk and ice as opposed to steamed milk. You get whipped cream and chocolate curls on this one too!
One thing I would like to mention is the level of peppermint flavor. Though they use the same amount of syrup in each one, I find that it is a stronger peppermint flavor in the frappuccino. With the latte, I think the heat from the espresso calms down the peppermint a bit, which personally I prefer. This is of course up to you!
So if you are in the mood for a new coffee drink, or looking for a way to ease some of that holiday stress, why not splurge a little and treat your taste buds to something extra special this winter season with the Peppermint Mocha from Starbucks.
