One of my favorite things about the holiday season is the abundance of sweet things. I am in love with sweets of all kinds, and since I can’t eat sweets all day every day (well I COULD… but that would be bad), I have to take my sweets in the form of body products.
I am known for my “scent”. I can’t go anywhere without someone commenting “What smells like cupcakes?” A lot of my foody-scented arsenal is supplied by Philosophy. Philosophy is a body care company that is known for their skin care and “3-in-1’s” (combination body wash, shampoo and bubble bath). However, because my cabinets are filled to the brim with Philosophy body washes, I decided to go a different route and try their Melting Marshmallow body cream.
This cream comes in a 7 oz plastic tube with a flat cap for even product distribution. This product has had a few makeovers over the past few years: the first incarnation that I can remember, it was in a plastic tub with a black lid. The second incarnation is a tube with red lettering and blue snowflake patterns all over. The current incarnation is a sort of brownish color tube, with a cute little melty snowman on the front.
The company describes this scent as a “toasty marshmallow”. I’ve smelled a lot of toasted marshmallow scents and this is by far my favorite. There is something so completely awesome about the way this smells. It’s like every kind of delicious vanilla buttercream mixed with marshmallow fluff and topped with vanilla sugar. If I were younger and didn’t know any better, you can bet this would have been in my mouth in no time flat. But since I’m older and wiser from eating things that smell good but don’t necessarily taste good, I’ve opted to put it on my skin instead.
The only thing I really don’t like about this product is the way this sinks in. It’s slightly more watery of a cream than what I’m used to: when I get a body cream, I expect something thick that will really sink in and give me moisture, especially something that is sold to me for use in the winter (although, despite the cute little snowman on the tube, this product could be used all year round). The cream itself is a bit more translucent than most creams. It reminds me of shaving lotion or hair conditioner. Upon application of the cream, it is sticky… hey, like a melted marshmallow! Was this intentional? At any rate, the absorption rate leaves a lot to be desired. I feel cold and slightly sticky and wet after I use this cream… not good when it’s freezing outside and my heater is being a slowpoke at kicking on.
After the cream has been absorbed (it takes several minutes), my skin does feel nice and soft. A total bummer: the scent does not stay with me.
All in all, this product is a cute little gimmick, but if you’re looking for something “more seriously” moisturizing and with a longer-lasting scent, I would look elsewhere.
This cream is available at Sephora stores, Sephora.com, and Philosophy.com. It is priced at $16 for 7 oz.
