I’m not a car buff. I like nice cars but getting from point A to point B is about the extent of my love of cars. I am into spectacular cars. A car’s “Wow” factor will make me stop and stare. When a car zap’s you for a moment and you say “What is that?” Such a moment happened when I stumbled upon the Progressive Automotive XPrize showcase.
What is the Progressive Automative XPrize?
Progressive challenged car manufactures to make an over 100 MPGe car. With the advent of hybrid and the colossal fossil fuel failure demonstrated by companies like BP, better fuel consumption is a priority. Progressive Stepped up to the plate along with many congressional supporters to promote better Cars for consumers. The focus of the XPrize design, safety, production, marketability, and performance.
What is ZAP’s Alias?
“ZAP!” is a manufacturer of cars whose name stands for Zero Air Pollution. There were many award winners at the progressive showcase. But while waiting for the Progressive Award Winners I happened to see a “Wow Car!” It was the Alias produced by ZAP!. When I first saw it, I wondered if it was a car or a bike. The ZAP! – Alias only has 3 wheels on its strong lightweight composite body. The alias is a car that gets 124 Miles per gallon energy equivalent (MPGe). In the Big Picture, the ZAP! – Alias is a 100% electric car.
What is MPGe?
The MPGe is the measure of how much energy is consumed by the vehicle verses the distance traveled. Many if not all the cars at this car extravaganza were Over 100MPGe Cars. In perspective, most cars I know of get 20-30 miles per gallon. A few Hybrid cars might get 65 MPGe on the freeway. When you consider doubling the top production Hybrid, you can compete at the Progressive Automotive XPrize level. With a top speed of roughly 100 miles per hour, and a 100 mile range. The ZAP Alias appears to be a great car for city driving.
What made Zap Alias Special to me?
I have a fondness for the ZAP! – Alias because of Keiko Kim. Keiko is the Marketing Representative that took the time to introduce me to the car’s attributes. Keiko of ZAP! was friendly and let me know that the ZAP – Alias will be in production within the next year. With many celebrities having production orders in place, the Alias is positioned to be a popular car in celebrity circles. Keiko let me know that this over 100 MPGe car will cost $35,000 with only a minuscule $99 reservation fee. With that in perspective, you get over 100 MPGe and the price is within reason.
I stayed at this event to see who would win the XPrize and to see whom from congress would show up. But again, the one thing that stuck out for me at this event was the knowledgeable and helpful Keiko and the ZAP! – Alias. Other 100 MPGe car might have better millage but I challenge them to have better customer and prospective customer service. So if you are considering a 100 MPGe car, I hope you consider ZAP! and the Alias. I know I will.
