If I didn’t know better, I’d swear that Feisal Abdul Rauf, the Imam who is spearheading the effort to build a proposed “Islamic Cultural Center” a mere two blocks from Ground Zero, has been hanging around Vice President Joe Biden for too long; he seems to have caught his “food in mouth” disease.
In his latest statement during a speech to the Council of Foreign Relations, Imam Rauf stated that it’s “absolutely disingenuous” to suggest that the site is located on “hallowed ground”.
Now, technically, he’s correct… like I mentioned earlier, the proposed site is two blocks from the Ground Zero itself, but given it’s close proximity to the site, and the fact that his cultural center is being renovated from the Burlington Coat Factory, which itself was damaged by the landing gear of one the planes, most people still consider it as part of the site itself.
But here’s the real kicker to this statement.
To back up his claims, Imam Rauf pointed out the location has a “strip joint” and “betting parlors” nearby. Therefore, the site couldn’t possibly be “hallowed ground”.
Ok, I may be going out on a limb here, I could be totally out of line, but correct me if I’m wrong…
Aren’t Muslims against things like strip joints? Aren’t Muslims against gambling establishments? Aren’t they against alcohol, which both places would doubtless be serving by the truckload?
If so, wouldn’t it be contradictory to their beliefs to build a mosque so close to such facilities? I just don’t see devout Muslims stuffing wads of bills in g-strings after prayer services, and then heading out to lose more cash betting on the ponies. It just doesn’t click.
So this brings back the question… what is the real reason why they are so insistent on building the mosque right in that spot, even to the point where they refused to even meet Governor David Paterson to discuss possible relocation options, if the proposed center is so close to facilities that offend them so much?
Imam Rauf gave his answer on why it has to be there during a CNN interview with Soledad O’Brian…
“If we move from that location, the story will be the radicals have taken over discourse” he said. “The headlines in the Muslim world will be that Islam is under attack. And I’m less concerned about the radicals in America than I’m concerned about the radicals in the Muslim world.”
American radicals? Which American radicals? I’ve yet to hear of any anti-mosque protesters threatening to kill anyone or blow something up if the mosque isn’t moved. I haven’t heard any “death to Muslims” chants. Is he suggesting that Muslims will attack us again out of anger if it’s moved?
On a side note, will building the mosque on the proposed site make the Islamic radicals like us any more?
I find it almost amusing that Imam Rauf actually makes his threat under the guise that he’s only looking out for our safety, when it was his bright idea to build the damn thing so close to Ground Zero to begin with.
Kind of like presenting someone a ticking time bomb wrapped in a beautiful, silk cloth.
Let’s say that one of those evil, bigoted anti-mosque protestors… like me… said on national television, “You know, if they refuse to re-locate this mosque, it will inflame the anger of Christians all across America. Sooner or later, one of them is going to try to burn it down, or blow it up. Muslims will be the target of their wrath everywhere. For the safety of all Muslims, they need to cancel their plans to build it.”
Now, be honest… what do you think the Muslims, mosque supporters, the mainstream media, Hillary Clinton and President Obama would say about me? Go ahead, say it… I know it’s at the tip of your tongue.
In the same interview, Imam Rauf claims that if he had known all this controversy would happen, he would never have proposed building it there. Yet, he still refuses to consider re-locating it.
Sure, Imam… we believe you. Really we do.
Keep talking, Imam Rauf… the more you do, the more you make our case for us.
