Dyed red hair is notoriously difficult to keep from fading. Red hair dye fades more quickly than other colors of dye because the molecules that make it red are larger than that of other colors. Not only does this result in more color upkeep, but you may have to deal with a really unpleasant faded shade in between colors, such as pink hair or even bozo red hair. This reality about dyed red hair dissuades people from going red. However, there are ways to protect your red hair color.
While I know that people can get good results with boxed hair color, it’s best to avoid it. That is especially the case when dying your hair red. I believe that just about everyone should avoid boxed hair color. One caveat is that some of the semi-permanent hair colors, such as Clairol Natural Instincts, work pretty well.
That doesn’t mean that you have to head to a pricey salon. Instead ,visit a beauty supply store and purchase the products that go into the box. The hair color sold at those stores, such as Sally’s beauty supply, is professional and much higher quality than what you can find in a drugstore. My personal recommendation for red dye is Wella permanent hair color. Ion is another option. Another benefit of purchasing the professional hair dye is that you can mix together two or even three colors to get a custom hair color.
If possible, it is best to reduce the amount and frequency that you shampoo and condition your hair. That isn’t really possible for everyone, especially if you have oily hair. Dry shampoo is helpful for at least letting you skip one or two days per week. There are a variety on the market. The very best dry shampoo that I have used is by Batiste. I also purchase it at Sally’s beauty supply.
The key to fake redhead success is using a protein filler. Not only does a protein filler result in a more even color, but also makes the color last much longer. Protein fillers even out the porosity in your hair. It actually repairs your damaged hair. The reason that it’s so important when dying your hair red is that it locks in and seals the color, which prevents it from fading so quickly.
Investing in high quality hair color and using a few of these tips will not only keep your red locks in excellent condition, but will also keep it looking shiny and vibrant.
