On 22nd Street along with Alabama Street in the Mission District, driveways that have long been subject to use are causing a stir among residents. Although these driveways are no longer in use, the occupants of the building insist that the area in front of the driveways is their personal parking space, even threatening car-owners with tickets if they dare utilize the spot.
Mission local Erika Hutzly laments, “Those garages are no longer in use. Why can’t I park my car in the empty space? Usually I’m forced to park all the way around the block.”
These illegitimate private parking zones are not only illegal, but infuriating. So, why can’t these driveways be restored to normal curbs to make room for more parking space? Many outraged citizens are still searching for an answer as they look to city officials for help.
