I would like to say from the beginning that I am speaking from my own personal experience with the public school system in Philadelphia. I went to school in Philadelphia, PA. from kindergarten all the way until I graduated from high school. Now, that I am a parent with school aged children. I have concerns about the public schools in Philadelphia. I do believe there are excellent teachers in the Philadelphia public school system but there are also problems within the system which may prevent the teachers from doing their job effectively.
When I was in school I was a victim of bullies which in turn made it very difficult for me to learn in school. At the time being bullied was not treated as a serious matter in public schools. I think many thought once the bully was addressed by the teacher or principal the situation would be resolved. This was never the case for me and in turn I stop telling my teachers about the bullying because it only made things worst. I do believe I could have received a much better quality of education if I was not bullied.
When one of my children started to be bullied in school I took action right away. I talked to the teachers as well as the principal at the school to get action done right away to prevent my child from being bullied more. It felt as though there was nothing they could do to ensure that my child would be safe going to school everyday. So, it was up to me to do something about this situation because the bullying had progressed so fast that within a few days he did not want to go to school. He was in fear of his life.
Another parent suggested to me that I should enroll my child into a cyber school. I had never heard of this type of school before and no one at my child’s brick and mortar school suggested this alternative school to me. I enrolled my child into the cyber school as quickly as I could. His well being and education was most important to me at the time.
Cyber schools are a little bit different from brick and mortar schools. In cyber schools the children do not get days off for snow, they do not have to go to a building to receive their education, their education comes to them by way of the Internet and phone, and the teachers seem to have a lot more time to help their students. The best part for me and my child was that the bullying would no longer be an issue or a hindrance in my child’s education anymore.
I understand that many people that work for the public schools in Pennsylvania would like to put a stop to or limit the amount of children allowed to go to public cyber schools in Pennsylvania. In my opinion cyber schools were a blessing for me and my child. Cyber schools allow children to learn in a good and positive environment. Children need to be in a good environment to learn. I believe the teachers that work for cyber schools are able to teach their students instead of having to deal with a class of thirty or more children that are not behaving.
A good quality of education is more than just having good teachers. Children need to be in a safe environment. They need to have resources to help and encourage them to want to do better in life.
