Everyone has heard the age-old suggestion for public speaking: picture the audience in their underwear and you’ll be just fine. However, this doesn’t always work for everyone, and can actually be more traumatizing in some situations than effective. There are many different tricks and suggestions that people will offer to make public speaking an easier task, but as long as you take the time to be prepared and ready for the experience, you can do just fine without any of the multitude of coping mechanisms out there.
Public speaking is something that millions of people do on a regular basis, and yet it still terrifies many of the people who do it. Sometimes, it’s not about finding the cure for your fear of public speeches, but simply going out there and facing it until you realize that it will be okay. If you are giving a speech where you have to make an impression or convince people of something, you need to have a positive attitude, be outspoken and charismatic, and not hide behind the podium the entire time.
It can be hard to be fun and positive when you’re intimidated by the large audience. However, if you remember that they’re there to listen to YOU and that they are probably more scared of being in your shoes than you are, you might be able to quell your fears. It doesn’t matter what ‘trick’ you use or how you get over that fear of speaking in public, because when it’s a part of your life, it is something that you’ll just have to get used to. Many people hate public speaking or fear it because they are being put in the spotlight. Any mistakes they make will be judged, they can be humiliated, or people won’t like or understand them.
People have better things to do than to humiliate and judge you, you can trust that. Generally speaking, people will like you when you speak publicly. Your audience is NOT against you, which is contrary to what most people think. You should pay attention to your audience, your environment, and anything else that can help you to get the focus off of yourself so that you can give the best speech possible every single time. Make sure that you engage people, entertain them, and focus on that rather than your own nerves. If you do this, you will be successful every time.
