The word is out: a new restaurant called Pudong is coming to the Castro. It will be where Mecca was before it closed in 2009. The chef in charge will be Jason Xu, formerly of Shanghai 1930 for the last decade. The cuisine? Pure Shanghai. With a touch of French. But only because Shanghai cuisine is influenced by French cooking, because this isn’t a fusion restaurant. Nor will it be a nightclub like its predecessor.
The décor is expected to be a bit different, too. Gone will be the concrete floors and dark color palette that defined the moody, pulsing Mecca. Instead, marble and stone with a cream and brown décor will define Pudong.
Pudong (formerly Mecca) is/ will be located at 2029 Market Street at Dolores. The projected opening date is December 1.
