Pug lovers are a breed apart. Pug owners go crazy over their wrinkly little snoring dogs. In Shepherdsville, Kentucky, just outside Louisville, pug lovers gather at Pugpalooza to mingle with other pug lovers and enjoy an afternoon of pug centered activities.
As pug lovers, my wife and I have attended several pug-centered activities in or around Louisville over the years. The main pug event of the year in the Louisville area is Pugpalooza, a day full of crazy activities for pug owners and their dogs. In 2010, Pugpalooza took place on Saturday, June 19 at the Paroquet Springs Conference Center in Shepherdsville, just a fifteen-minute drive from Louisville.
Pug Kissing Contests
Pug lovers do not mind their pugs kissing all over them. Many owners encourage it! For this contest, pugs kiss their owners and the judges determine the best “kiss!”
Pugs are not known for speed but pug races are oddly fascinating. At Pugpalooza, event organizers hold several different races based on the ages of the participants. Our female pug won a race one year even though she was looking over her shoulder the entire time. My wife knelt by the finish line clapping for our pug, and that was apparently enough encouragement for her!
Even the most serious pug lover will admit that pugs do not excel at performing tricks. Still, some pugs are more talented than others! In the pug tricks portion of Pugpalooza, the dogs do things like walk on their hind legs, speak on command and roll over. We entered our older pug in the pug tricks competition, but his trick of dancing around on his hind legs like a ballet dancer was not impressive enough to win an award.
Pug Costume Contest
This is the main event for most of the pug lovers at Pugpalooza. These people love to dress up their dogs in crazy costumes like bottles of ketchup or hot dogs or bumblebees. We have never entered our pugs into this contest because the competition is so fierce.
Popsicle Licking Contest
This is a relatively new event for Pugpalooza, and it is exactly what it sounds like. Pugs compete against one another by licking popsicles until a winner can be crowned. I would consider entering my pugs into this contest but they are both on diets and we try to keep them away from sweets. Plus, a sticky pug requires a bath when she gets home.
The location and date of Pugpalooza changes from year to year. For information on the next Pugpalooza and other upcoming pug events in the Louisville, Kentucky area, visit kentuckianapugs.com.
