With my own family feeling the loss of employment due to the crisis in the housing industry, I am well aware of the difficulties families and companies alike are facing across the country in today’s economy. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the housing industry. Struggling to pay for basic expenses like utilities on unemployment and seeing no end to the country’s financial crisis in sight, I was truly stunned when Illinois Governor Pat Quinn recently criticized his challenger, Senator Bill Brady, over layoffs at Brady’s family owned Construction Company.
No matter what your political affiliation may be, there is no denying Pat Quinn’s insensitivity to all of the millions of Americans who have lost their jobs due to the downturn in the economy brought on by the housing crisis. In a failed attempt to smear his opponent, Governor Quinn demonstrated that he comprehends nothing about the problems real people are facing.
“Senator Brady is an expert at layoffs, said Quinn. “He’s applied his chain saw to his real estate development company and laid people off. He didn’t create any jobs at all.”
Meanwhile, Pat Quinn enjoys the benefits of a life as a career politician who not only fails to make necessary cuts in government spending, but had the audacity to recently issue big raises to his personal staff. It was recently reported that Quinn doled out 43 salary increases since taking office last year with the average raise issued being more than 11% despite the fact the state of Illinois faces an enormous deficit and an unbalanced budget.
With the November election drawing closer each day Quinn’s campaign will be beefing up its assault on Senator Brady for everything from gun control to his voting record. However, attacking a small construction business for being forced to layoff good people so they can simply stay afloat, exemplifies Pat Quinn’s total lack of understanding of what it’s like to work for a living. This is more than an attack on Bill Brady. It should offend all hard working Americans affected by the housing crisis including construction companies, plumbers, electricians, developers, builders, carpenters, and tradesman of all sorts who have seen losses in earnings, layoffs and no end in sight to the state’s economic crisis.
It is little wonder that Senator Bill Brady recently received the endorsement of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce. According to the Chicago Tribune, The Chamber President Doug Whitley stated that “his group chose to support Brady over Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn because they have “lost confidence in the current administration.”
While Quinn’s campaign will surely continue their smear campaign against Senator Bill Brady, this particular smear attempt will surely backfire. Quinn’s remarks about Brady making layoffs in his construction company actually made me realize for the first time that Bill Brady has experienced first-hand the problems facing small businesses in Illinois. On the other hand, Pat Quinn appears clueless and based on these comments it may well be that Quinn thinks that making cuts in order to balance a budget is a bad thing. We’ll find out what Illinois voters think on November 2nd.
