After about a week of speculation whether Pastor Terry Jones from the Dove Outreach Center in Gainesville Florida, would go ahead with his planned burning of Qurans on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the Pastor did not go through with his plans. In a move that was a relief to everyone in the United States government, Pastor Jones announced Saturday, September 11 that he wasn’t going to burn the Qurans because he felt that God was telling him not to, according to The Associated Press.
Even though the Quran burning did not go on, the Muslim world reacted like it did. There were two protesters killed in Afghanistan as they tried to storm the local government headquarters in the Baraki Barak district. Afghan soldiers had to open fire on the protesters to protect the building. Iranian students from the Union of Islamic Associations of Independent Students plan to protest the now halted Quran burning on Monday outside the Swiss Embassy in Iran, according to CNN. So even though the Pastor canceled the Quran burning the Muslim world has still gotten violent and continues to hold protests against the western world.
This is indicative of the relationship that America and other western countries have always had with the Muslim world. Even though we continually give in to the demands from these countries, they continue to find fault with us. By continuing the protests the Muslim countries have weakened the relations with the United States and other western countries. The reason for this is because the protests still going on have shown the world that even when we have apologized and shown that we are willing to change what was a moment of bad judgment on the Pastor’s part, they are still not willing to forgive and forget. So if they are not able to forgive on something that is just an imitation of what the Muslim worlds have done to us, with their burning of the American Flag and of bibles, then how are they going to move forward to be a part of negotiations about what is best for every country on a global level. Basically, the Muslim world wants America and the rest of the Western world to “do as they say, and not as they do.”
Hopefully, Iran will cancel their planned protests since the Quran burning did not happen. The future remains to be seen for the relations between the Muslim world and America.
