I am a huge fan of strategy games and epic game play usually found on such titles like Civilization and usually only found on a PC. After playing R.U.S.E for a couple of days I got the feeling they are slowly figuring out how to have multiple units that act intelligently in a strategy game for the Xbox 360.
If you rented Civilization Revolution on the Xbox and owned a copy of Civilization 4 for the PC you were probably highly disappointed with the simplicity of the game play like I was. In R.U.S.E the controls are really simple but the amount of units you control, need to create and more importantly need to react with against pretty smart A.I, is a lot for any strategy fan to sink their teeth into.
R.U.S.E combines the best of both simulations and strategy games from the PC and creates a really intense, challenging strategy/simulation missing from the Xbox’s library of titles.
The graphics are really cool, they won’t blow your socks off with realism, but the amount of little things happening on the map all blend together to create a really alive and evolving environment to play on. The controls are fairly simple, but I didn’t feel limited due to the wealth of units and buildings I could create, the only problem was with controlling individual units and groups of units.
Sometimes, especially in the heat of battle or during an ambush, getting control over the right units was frustrating, but I’ve just started playing so hopefully familiarity will bring some much needed improvement to that part of my game play.
The online game play is fun, with very challenging opponents, so don’t feel bad getting blown off the map in your first few matches online. My only real gripes with R.U.S.E are the corny dialogue during the cut scenes, for some reason every part of R.U.S.E is rough and intense, until the cut scenes unfold, and while trying to capture the innocence of the time, some of the voice acting just comes off very corny.
R.U.S.E. isn’t for everyone, if you don’t like complicated, difficult and long-lived strategy based game play, then stay away from R.U.S.E, even on beginner it’s a challenge. If you love strategy games and really want an in-depth experience on Xbox 360, then pick up R.U.S.E you won’t be disappointed, I give R.U.S.E a 4.35 / 5.
