Is the vinyl in the front of the bathtub starting to curl and separate from the original caulking? There is an easy fix for this that can be done inexpensively and without headaches.
Tools needed: Hand saw, yard stick, measuring tape, caulking, razor, hammer, small finishing nails and duct tape.
There are two basic ways to fix this problem one is to simply use quarter round the other would involve gluing a piece of baseboard to the side of the tub.
Here is how to do this project in five easy to do steps:
Step 1: Cut away the lip that is from the buckled vinyl using a razor knife. Be careful not to cut any more than you have to get rid of the buckled edge.
Note: When cutting it is a good ideal to use a yardstick or some other straight edge to keep the cut straight.
Step 2: Measure the depth of the area to see how wide the baseboard or quarter round has to be. Then measure the length of the tub itself. Go to the hardware store and determine what one should buy. This might be a piece of quarter round or wooden baseboard depending on ones taste.
Step 3: After purchasing the piece of wood that will do the job proceed to the next step. Cut the piece to fit the length of the tub beveling both ends so they will taper against the wall.
Beveling is simply cutting the wood at an angle in this case forty five degree on each end.
Step 4: Now the wood is ready to be attached if quarter round was chosen then apply caulking to the back and bottom and nail it to the floor. Do this tightly along the edge of the bathtub. Caulk any areas that might need to be sealed.
If a wooden base board was chosen then simply caulk the bottom of the board and the back as well. Tape the board in place using duct tape and allow it to sit over night. When taping the wood in place do it tightly. Remove the duct tape and run a small bead of caulk around it the next day to finish the seal.
Step 5: Now the baseboard or quarter round can be painted and the job is complete.
When finished the vinyl floor will look like new and the floor underneath will be safe once again.
