Does your vehicle have a metal to street sound occasionally? This clanging could be a broken muffler exhaust hanger. This can be backed up by pulling on the muffler to see if it is loose and then use a flashlight to establish where the hanger is broken. The hanger will be a thick rubber ring attached to the muffler and frame at some point.
Warning: do not pull on the muffler if the vehicle is hot.
Here is how to fix this problem in 5 easy to do steps:
Tools Needed: Jack, jack stands wheel scotches, closed end wrenches, and a flashlight.
Step 1: Scotch the wheels forward and rear that will not be off the ground. Jack the car up and use jack stands to support the car for safety as one will have to be underneath the vehicle. There is no such thing as being too safe when one is underneath a car.
Step 2: Locate the rubber ring then remove it both from the frame and the muffler if necessary. The trick is to get the old one out of the way. Now hang the new ring that one has purchased on the hanger connected to the frame. This will hang there until one is ready for the next step.
Step 3: Have someone push up on the muffler or simply use a small jack to get it where desired. This is because there is not much give to the hanger and the muffler needs to be close in so as it will loop around the hanger on the connected to the frame. When jacking the muffler be sure not to put extreme pressure on the it. Use a two by four as a go between for softer impact.
Step 4: If the ring still needs some slight help in getting to where it needs to be then one can use a closed end wrench to go in the bracket and then use it like a pry bar to pull the band down to the bracket. This is necessary sometimes especially when there is only a small gap between them.
Step 5: Remove the jack from underneath the muffler if applicable. Remove the jack, the stands and the scotches. The job should be completed and the hanger will be good until next time.
Doing things yourself is rewarding in many different areas. One saves money, builds confidence and sometimes impresses their friends as well.
