Remember in recent years when the Republican party put up moderate candidates like Arlen Specter and Lindsey Graham? “Be loyal to the party” was the message to the conservative base. It’s important to keep our majority (than to stand on principle?). Like good team players, we sucked it up and went along with it. And what did we get from our loyalty? Too many of the Republican moderates, i.e. “elites” willing to compromise on major issues. Or worse, taking Democratic socialist ideas and “improving” on them. Remember how we were criticized over our view that amnesty for illegals was NOT a good idea?
So now that the tables are turned and it is the MODERATES who are losing to conservative candidates in Republicans primaries, what is the reaction? Simply, they are SORE LOSERS.
There are several races this fall where that is evident:
Alaska – Joe Miller defeated current Senator Lisa Murkowski in the Republican primary. Now Murkowski is campaigning as a write-in vote. And she’s gotten help from Alaska’s Supreme Court stating that election officials may provide a list of write-in candidates to voters. You know, one of those “let’s make up rules as we go along to help the Democrats win” scenarios. Except in this case, it’s not a Democrat. Although she might as well be since she is using Democratic tactics like impugning Joe Miller’s military record.
Florida – Charlie Crist ran as a Republican, lost the primary to Marco Rubio then took his ball and went home – as an Independent. This one has gotten really interesting. Last week Bill Clinton was dispatched to Florida to try and persuade the Democratic candidate, Kendrick Meeks to drop out of the race and endorse Crist! So have the Democrats found an ally in Crist or are they just terrified of having a Hispanic REPUBLICAN in the senate.
Delaware – Mike Castle, the Republican leadership’s hand picked candidate lost to tea party backed candidate Christine O’Donnell. Castle has refused to endorse O’Donnell. The night of her victory Karl Rove had a temper tantrum saying she couldn’t win and waving around papers about why it took her so long to pay off her college loan. He accused O’Donnell of saying nutty things. So much for being a team player. It is amazing that NOW has come to her defense in this baseless sex scandal. No word from Karl Rove on it. O’Donnell is closing fast on this race and if she loses by single digits. people like Karl Rove should apologize to her and all conservatives.
So why this attitude from the moderates? Simple. They want very badly to hold onto their positions of power- like little kids trying to hold onto their toys. In this, the old adage that there is nothing different between the two parties is sadly true.
Now comes rumors that the Republican leadership is gearing up to destroy Sara Palin. This would not surprise me. Palin is the embodiment of the tea party movement. And elites hate the tea party movement. It represents a major threat to their power structure and has already upset their apple cart. But it will not work. Sara Palin has been through this before in Alaska where she had to defeat the “good ol’ boys” establishment before defeating the Democrats. She knows how to “play the game” and any attempt to attack her will be met with a swift and greater counter offensive. She isn’t called SaraCuda for nothing! The elite should also remember that an attack on her (or any of the tea party candidates) is an attack on the tea party itself and the ballot box can be a very powerful tool in removing them from office. You betcha!
