My family of four recently dined at Max & Erma’s in Middleburg Heights, OH. Generous portions and friendly staff always make for an enjoyable meal.
We arrived shortly after 6 pm on a Saturday evening, and were seated immediately. The restaurant was busy but not overcrowded. Our server, Logan, was polite and attentive, keeping our beverages filled without being asked. At the end of our meal, I liked that he first asked me quietly if the children would be having the sundae bar before asking them if they were ready for dessert.
Max & Erma’s menu has a wide variety to suit any appetite, from soups and sandwiches to gourmet burgers and entrées. We have tried everything from Cajun shrimp and pasta to garbage burgers (topped with everything but the kitchen sink), and are always very pleased and very full.
Since we were starving when we arrived, we ordered the Nachos Grande appetizer. It was a very large serving of tortilla chips topped with seasoned ground beef, sour cream, shredded cheese and jalapeno peppers. We opted out of the guacamole. This app is more than enough to share even with four adults.
For my entrée on this visit, I returned to my favorite: chicken fajitas. They are by far the best fajitas I have ever had, even from traditional Mexican restaurants. Loaded with juicy chicken, onion, and green and red peppers, you will want to lick the sizzling skillet if not for fear of embarrassment (or burning your tongue!).
My husband ordered the steak fajitas, and was not disappointed. The only down side was there were no leftovers for lunch the next day.
Kids 12 and under can choose from standard fare such as burgers, corn dogs, pizza, mac and cheese, and chicken fingers. Grilled chicken breast is also offered as a healthier alternative.
My children are pretty consistent (read: boring) with their choices as well. My daughter had the chicken fingers, and my son had the burger – both with French fries. The portions are large, so they took about half of their meals home in a doggy bag, but only because they were saving room for dessert.
And who can resist the Build-Your-Own Sundae Bar set up in an antique, claw-foot bathtub? Kids can make their own sundaes for just $0.99 with any meal. Start with vanilla ice cream and add chocolate, caramel or strawberry sauce. Then add sprinkles such as mini M&Ms, Nerds or sour gummy worms. Top it all off with as much whipped cream as you like! You even have your choice of white or blue whipped cream.
Adults may prefer to order Max & Erma’s famous chocolate chip cookies. You order them when you order your meal and they bake them while you eat your dinner. They are served hot from the oven and are absolutely fantastic!
Max & Erma’s offers free refills on soft drinks (Coke products) including their gourmet sodas and teas. My kids love the Watermelon Fizz (Sprite and watermelon with cherries) and Beetlejuice (grape juice and Sprite complete with gummy worms).
Our entire meal cost less than $50. This included an $8 savings from our local Enjoy the City coupon book bought from our school fundraiser. Not bad for a family of four, including appetizer and dessert.
