The “Restoring Honor Rally” being held today, August 28, 2010, a historical day credited to Dr. King, is expected to draw more than 100,000 supporters. This day is also a traditional day to reflect on Dr. King’s famous “I have a dream speech.” This “Restoring Honor Rally”, according to Glenn Beck, is being held to honor American military men and women. The rally also hopes to lead Americans back to this country’s traditional founding principles of faith, hope and charity.
Why This Day For The Rally?
Why was this specific day chosen for the rally? In the St. Louis Today, Glenn Beck states “It’s not the date, it’s the message,” and “…I had no idea Aug. 28 was the date of the MLK speech when we booked it.” Whether or not Glenn Beck or other rally organizers knew how traditional this day was may never be revealed. This particular rally, the “Restoring Honor Rally,” appears to many people to disrespect and take away from the honor that is given to Dr. King and his famous speech.
If this traditional day was chosen because organizers for the rally realized the importance of holding a rally on such a commemorative day that will honor Dr. King well into the future, then brilliance may explain the choosing of this date for the rally. If organizers knew that holding a rally to honor American military men and women on such a traditional day would create a lot of controversy, this alone is brilliant. What better advertisement and news coverage can you get to cover a rally and help you spread your message of honor?
When you look back in American history, you don’t have to look hard to realize that it has been traditional for Americans to place traditional Christian holidays on the same days as other important days or on non-Christian holidays that are honored by others. Let’s take a look at Christmas for example. The birth date of Christ was chosen by the Roman Catholic Church to honor His day. They chose this date in order to replace a Pagan holiday with a Christian one. The reasoning behind this was that it would be easier to convert Pagans to Christianity if the traditional holidays were honored on the same day. This would make it easier for Pagans to learn Christian ways and honor the Christian faith by observing Christmas on an already familiar traditional day.
What Will You Honor?
So is this rally just another attempt to “convert” more people away from a traditional, historical day or is it an advertising ploy in order to gain more news coverage for support of this particular rally? Either way, honor will prevail. Will today’s rally inspire you to break from tradition and if so which tradition? Following this controversial rally, will we honor Dr. King’s famous speech, honor this country’s traditional founding principles, or will we honor both?
