Restoring Truthiness has been a popular Internet call lately. A possible Restoring Truthiness rally is being organized, although a Restoring Truthiness gathering would be nothing without the man who inspired it. As most late night fans know, Stephen Colbert began his show by coining a brand new word for the English language. Since then, that word has come to symbolize much of the political climate, proving that the gut is more important these days than hard facts. As such, some fans believe that a Restoring Truthiness rally would be the perfect antidote to Glenn Beck’s recent gathering.
After Beck’s controversial rally took place over a week ago, a stealth movement began online for another gathering of politically minded people. Only this time, it is based around someone with an even greater – and funnier – cult of personality than Beck. The website colbertrally.com wants to have Stephen Colbert, the creator of the word “truthiness” hold a rally of his own at the Lincoln Memorial.
To get his attention, the Restoring Truthiness crowd has taken to Google Trends. Their mission today was to make “Restoring Truthiness” the number one trend on Google as of noon today. As of 1 pm est, their mission has succeeded, as the search term is flooding search engines and Twitter.
Their stated purpose is to get the Restoring Truthiness plans syndicated to online blogs, and reach 100,000 fans on their Facebook page. With that, they believe they can get Colbert’s attention, and persuade him to actually hold a rally at the DC Mall.
If such an event happened, it would be in line with Colbert’s routine. The Colbert Report is a direct parody of cable news, and their cult of personality complex. When the show started, its biggest target was Bill O’Reilly, but now Glenn Beck has become a more fitting target. As such, spoofing his “Restoring Honor” rally like this would be ideal fodder for the show.
However, any Restoring Truthiness plans hinge on Colbert noticing the petitions. Today’s efforts should help, but his big priority this week is holding special shows for Iraq war veterans. Tomorrow and Thursday’s episodes are entirely devoted to the returning Iraq troops, months after Colbert went to Iraq and got his head shaved.
After that, Colbert could make room to play along, if his schedule is clear. He has already gone on the road to Iraq, Vancouver and Philadelphia in the past, so he could set something up in DC. The Internet has been a powerful tool in getting Colbert’s name on mascots, bridges and space station treadmills, so forming a Restoring Truthiness rally would be a drop in the bucket.
Since The Colbert Report returns after the holiday break tonight at 11:30 pm, fans will watch to see if Colbert will address this latest movement, and whether he can take part.
