As baby boomers start to retire, many are facing dismal retirement prospects. Living the good life in the current economy and even just providing for the costs of health care can push a retirement time line into the distant future. The biggest issue stopping new retirees from achieving their dreams is a closed mind. Retirement in America is fraught with expenses, but there is no reason why someone has to retire in America. Retirement abroad is possible and in several Asian countries you can live like a king for under six hundred dollars a month-including the cost of health care.
One country in particular that could serve as a retirement home is Thailand. Thailand is starting to attract wealthier retirees from places such as Taiwan and Japan. Able to get more for their dollar, they move to Thailand where for five thousand dollars a year, a government program will set them up with a visa, quality housing, and food. Thailand is also the site of the airport at Bangkok which serves as a nexus for the regions air travel.
If Thailand is not for you, try investigating a country like Taiwan. Health care is excellent and inexpensive. The country also has the highest temple per capita of any place on the planet. Taiwan boasts of delicious night markets, hiking, sandy beaches, tea fields, and a plethora of hot springs. Taiwan is a retired person’s paradise because it has everything someone who is retired could want. Days spent cruising shopping venues and teahouses and nights passed relaxing in a hot spring can easily be had.
In a global economy it no longer makes sense to limit your retirement options to America. Years spent carefully saving for the anticipated day of retirement are in vain if the cost of health care, rent, food, and utilities is too high. Find a place abroad and spend your retirement years free from money worries and in paradise.
