The site to secure an IRS PTIN was up briefly, but it’s not operating at this time.
Paid tax preparers are chomping at the bit to acquire the PTIN that will be required as of Jan. 1, 2011. I was able to access and print a copy of the W-12. However, the site was not fully operable, and there was no way to access the online registration section.
After speaking with a “hot-line” rep on Thursday, I was advised the site will be taken down “until sometime next week and the manual (by snail mail) form W-12 would be back on and ready when the online registration was ready.”
The hot-line number is 1 877 613-7846.
Rather than wait, (impatient me) I printed off the W-12 and the line-by-line instructions that are part of the form, completed it and mailed it to the address specified in Iowa. The word on mailed registration is that it will take four to six weeks – well before the Dec. 31 deadline.
The online address is noted at the end of this article.
There is no need to look on the IRS site for the W-12. I checked this morning and again got the following message: This product will be posted here soon. Products are generally posted overnight after each workday. Please check back to see when this product will be posted.”
For the time being registration is not happening – stay tuned.
