Since I knew my wife wasn’t up to cooking dinner Saturday night and I really didn’t feel like making anything from scratch, I decided to run to the store Saturday afternoon and pick up pre-made lasagna from the freezer section.
The lasagna was going to take nearly 2 hours to bake and I knew we wouldn’t be able to wait that long without snacking, so I decided to buy some garlic bread to make as an appetizer too. After checking out our usual brands, I decided to try one that was somewhat different; Roasted Vegetable Garlic Cheese Bread from the brand Bellatoria.
The thing that intrigued me about this bread is, even though I was buying it as an appetizer, it looked a lot like it could be a meal itself. It was regular garlic/cheese bread. Only it also had roasted vegetables, including onions and corn (something we thought was a little strange). I figured, if nothing else, it would give us a flavor that was different from what we were used to.
The bread turned out to be OK. But, there were definitely things I would change about it too.
The box I purchased had two half-loaves of bread inside it. At first, I was just going to make one and leave the other for later. But I noticed they weren’t very big and figured it was best to make both. Also, even if I had kept the other one, I would have had to re-wrap it since the packaging was not re-sealable.
The bread did prove to be pretty filling. My wife and I only managed to eat one of the loaves both while waiting for the lasagna and while eating it. However, if I wouldn’t have made both, we wouldn’t have had any leftovers to go with the leftover main course.
As far as the vegetables were concerned, other than the corn, which really didn’t seem to fit, it was a good mix that added a flavor that was definitely different than the average garlic bread. However, as is usually the case, the quantity was a bit on the low side and, when cut, there were quite a few pieces that didn’t have any vegetables on them at all.
Overall, as I said before, this was an OK product. But, while different from most other garlic bread on the market, Bellatoria skimped a bit too much on the vegetables and, as a result, it failed to live up to our expectations. I would buy it again; but, only if it were on sale.
