My wife ended up doing a bit of grocery shopping yesterday afternoon and, while at the store, decided to find something for us to have for dinner. After looking around a bit, she ultimately decided to make the kids hot dogs but picked up a Birds Eye Voila Shrimp Scampi Dinner for the two of us.
I have had a lot of items from the Birds Eye Voila brand before and have been a fan of most. Unfortunately, this was one that proved to be quite a bit of a disappointment.
When my wife first saw these, she gave serious consideration to buying two bags because she didn’t think one would be enough, even for two people. But, at $5, she decided against that.
She was right to be concerned because one bag really was not enough. There was enough scampi in there for each of us to have one small serving and that’s it. Fortunately, even though my wife didn’t buy a second bag of the shrimp scampi, she did have enough common sense to pick up a bag of frozen vegetables to go with it. Otherwise, we would have still been starving.
Quantity is an issue with most other brands of frozen skillet dinners too so I probably could have overlooked it if the dinner was one of the best I have ever had, or at least comparable in quality to other brands. Unfortunately, once again, that wasn’t the case.
First of all, there was hardly any shrimp in this shrimp scampi. We split it in half and I think we each got maybe four or five small pieces. I would expect that from a dinner that was about $2-$3. Not one that was $5 (and I think there was less shrimp in this one than some of the cheaper dinners we have had).
The dinner also seemed to lack any real taste. The shrimp was good. But, as I said before, there wasn’t much of it. And, when it came to the rest of it, we were eating something that was pretty bland. If we wouldn’t have added our own seasonings to it, I probably wouldn’t have been able to eat it.
As I said before, I have had other Birds Eye Voila dinners before and have been impressed with most. But, when it comes to this particular one, I really can’t see myself buying it again; at least not at the price my wife bought it at.
