As has been the case since she first started first grade, my daughter ate an early dinner at my parents’ house last night (they pick her up from school since my wife and I both are working right now). I wanted to make sure she got enough to eat so I told her I would make her a light dinner/snack before bed. After some discussion, she told me she wanted me to make her a packet of the Cheese Club Express Mac that was in our pantry.
This is a product my parents bought for the kids a few days ago and sent over to our house since they weren’t eating it that fast there. It turns out my daughters aren’t eating it very fast at our house either.
The Cheese Club Express Mac is very similar to the Kraft Easy Mac and a few other similar products that are available. Normally, I love this type of food because it is easy to make (you just cook the pasta in a bowl and add the cheese when it’s done) and because my kids will usually eat every bite of it. In fact, there have been times when I have had to make two bowls for my oldest daughter.
However, this brand, which is obviously a cheaper rip-off of the Kraft version, just does not live up to the original.
First of all, either the cook time is off or the box has you add too little water to the pasta. The reason I say this is I will cook the pasta for less than the box calls for and, even with doing that, there is no water left in the bowl when I’m done. This, in turn, means the cheese powder doesn’t turn into sauce and, more often than not, I have to add milk or water to get something other than powder.
The taste of this brand is also a bit off when compared to other brands. This surprised me a bit because I have had other Cheese Club products before and never really had a complaint about them. But, this time around, they did something with the flavor that just doesn’t work. My daughters seem to agree with me about this considering I have yet to see either of them finish a bowl of this product.
Needless to say, I probably won’t be buying this product in the future. I like the convenience. But, there are plenty of other brands that will give me more in terms of quality for not much more money.
