As I mentioned in another review, we decided to go through our pantry this past weekend and clean out the food that was getting stale or we knew would go uneaten. And, while doing that, we ended up discovering some items that we forgot we had even purchased.
One of those items was a package of cashews from the brand Dan-D-Pak. I didn’t remember buying these and, because they had sat forgotten in our pantry for who knows how long, I figured they were no good any more. However, upon further examination, I learned the package was unopened and wasn’t scheduled to expire for 6 more months so I ended up setting it aside as a snack for the upcoming Packers game.
Unfortunately for me, even though the cashews weren’t expired, it turns out they also weren’t very good.
Even though I intended on sharing the cashews with my wife and oldest daughter, they ended up running to the store and, since I was home alone (my youngest was actually there too, but she was sleeping), I opened the bag and started eating them by myself. When it was all said and done, I ended up sharing these after all because, after my first half dozen or so, I ended up taking the rest of the bag and dumping it on the squirrel feeder.
The biggest problem I had with this brand is the cashews tasted very stale. Again, I checked the package before I opened it and the expiration date wasn’t until 2011 so I can’t blame the fact they had sat in our pantry for a while. I should have expected something that still tasted fresh but, instead, got something that tasted like it had been left open for a few months.
Even if the cashews hadn’t been stale, I still would have disliked them because of the taste. First, they didn’t have enough salt on them; something that was a bit surprising because most brands tend to overdo it when it comes to that. Secondly, they had a bit of an odd taste to them. It’s hard to describe it exactly but they did not have the same flavor I would expect from a cashew.
Had it been a situation where I was eating this particular brand after the expiration date, I probably would consider giving it a second chance. But, since that wasn’t the case, I don’t think it is a brand I will buy again.
