I decided to make ravioli for dinner the other night and, as a result, had to do some shopping after work.
While in the freezer section, I learned the store was handing out some free samples (something that surprised me considering it was Friday evening and they usually only give out samples on Saturday mornings). One of the samples was for Emil’s Sausage Pizza, which they had available in their freezer section and was on sale.
I have had Emil’s pizza in the past; when I was at the county fair. But, I couldn’t remember a whole lot about it. That, and the fact I was getting kind of hungry, made me decide to try some of it. And, a few minutes later, when I came back to the freezer section because I forgot something (garlic bread), I ended up trying another piece.
After trying the two pieces, I feel comfortable saying it, in fact, is a decent frozen pizza brand.
One of the first things I noticed about this brand was the quantity of sausage and cheese that was on it. I only had two, sample sized, pieces (in other words, two little squares) and, between those two pieces, there were four pieces of sausage. I glanced at the rest of the pizza that the store was handing out to customers and saw it was covered in sausage. This was impressive considering most frozen brands tend to skimp on the meat.
It had a thin crust, which is something I’m usually not a big fan of. But, I did like the fact it was crispy. Again, I have had other brands that have that same thin crust and end up soggy.
As far as overall taste is concerned, I definitely had no complaints. There was a good blend of seasonings both on the sausage and on the tomato sauce. It added a decent flavor without making the pizza spicy (a problem I have had with way too many brands).
My only real complaint about this pizza is the price. Even on sale, it was almost $4 per pizza. This wouldn’t have been a big deal if the pizzas were larger and with a thicker crust. But, considering they were just 12-inches and had a thin crust, I do think that price was a bit too high, even if the quality was better than some other brands.
I enjoyed this pizza. However, they will have to reduce the price before I would consider buying it.
