My wife decided to surprise me a couple days ago by making one of my favorite dinners; chicken and dumplings. I spent my afternoon looking forward to this meal because I usually enjoy it. However, when I tried it, I couldn’t help but be disappointed by it because, quite simply, it was not her best batch. At the time, I wasn’t really sure why. It tasted like it was missing something but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
Then, I looked at the ingredients she purchased earlier in the day and realized exactly what the problem was; she used Food Club Ready-to-Serve Chicken Broth in it.
I will be fair and say Food Club does offer some decent items at a reduced price. But, they also have quite a few products out there that just aren’t as good as some of the more expensive guys. And, unfortunately, after seeing her purchase and doing a bit of experimenting with taste, I do believe the chicken broth is one of those products.
The problem with this particular broth is it has the same problem many other Food Club broths, gravies and sauces have; it was very bland. I tried some of the broth that wasn’t used in the chicken and dumplings and just could not taste anything. It was almost like eating a spoonful of water. Since most broths usually have flavor or, at very least, a salty taste to them, my wife doesn’t add much in terms of extra seasonings. This is why the chicken and dumplings weren’t as good as we were expecting them to be.
In addition to lacking taste, I think the Food Club Ready-to-Serve Chicken broth was a bit on the thin side. I wasn’t expecting it to be gravy like. But, much like the taste, it was more like water than broth. And, much like the flavor, this did affect my wife’s chicken and dumplings; which normally have a thick broth rather than something you would expect to see in a can of condensed soup.
We were able to add some seasonings and save her chicken and dumplings with quite a bit of doctoring up. However, we came away less than impressed with this particular choice of chicken broth. In the future, we will not make the mistake of buying this brand again and would not recommend it; especially if you are making something that is considered a signature dish.
