My wife had to run up the street to Walgreens Friday evening to refill one of her prescriptions. And, as is usually the case, especially when she takes our oldest daughter with her, she couldn’t avoid coming home without the store’s item of the month. This time around, it was the Intense Dark Midnight Reverie chocolate bar from the brand Ghirardelli.
Even though I personally avoid picking up the item of the month and do kind of frown on it when she does (because of the extra money), I will admit I have made some excellent discoveries. In fact, there are several different items I now buy on a regular basis after trying them for the first time when purchased that way.
This chocolate bar will not be one of those items.
I’ll start out by saying I’m not a huge dark chocolate fan and, under normal circumstances, I probably wouldn’t have liked this chocolate bar as much as one made with milk chocolate or any other non-dark chocolate. However, that being said, I have had plenty of other dark chocolate bars in the past and, while not crazy about them, didn’t think they were terrible. And, I thought I would end up having the same opinion of this one when my wife offered me a piece of it.
That, however, was not the case.
I took a bite out of this candy and almost spit it right out. I was expecting a heavy, sweet taste. Instead, had an almost bitter taste to it; very similar to what you might expect if you ate a couple coffee beans right out of the bag.
At first, I thought maybe it was just me. I’m still fighting a bit of a cold and, about an hour before trying this, I had taken some Zicam. That cold remedy has a tendency to temporarily mess up my taste buds and I was willing to give the chocolate the benefit of the doubt.
Until, that is, my wife took a bite of her piece and had a very similar expression on her face. She loves dark chocolate and this one apparently was too dark for even her (the coffee bean description I gave before was actually how she described it to me).
Needless to say, I did not finish my piece of the candy bar (neither did my wife) and the rest of the chocolate bar is still in our fridge untouched. We might have had luck in the past with Walgreens’ item of the month. But, this time around, we struck out.
