A few days ago, I was doing some grocery shopping at our local Walmart Super Center and came across some frozen sandwiches from the brand Great Value. They seemed a bit pricey when I first looked at them. But, after some consideration, I decided to buy a couple boxes; including a box of BBQ Pork Sandwiches.
Prior to trying this particular product, I had tried the Great Value Meatball Marinara Subs. And, even though meatball subs are usually my favorite, I found quite a few things about them that I didn’t like; including the fact they fell apart in the microwave. So, when I tried one of the BBQ pork sandwiches this past weekend, I honestly was not expecting much from it and figured, much like the meatball marinara, they would be a waste of money.
After trying it, however, I am happy to say I was wrong about that.
To be as perfectly honest as possible, I do want to say the sandwich wasn’t perfect. You could tell it was a frozen variety rather than a fresh sandwich and my wife and I (she had the other one in the box) both agreed they could use a bit more sauce.
However, there were quite a few things I did like about this particular sandwich too.
First, even though it was made in the microwave, the bread on the sandwich turned out OK. With most other brands, the bread either gets too hard or ends up very soggy. With this brand, the bread was a little damp (something that is to be expected when the bread has been frozen) but it still had some crispness to it without being overcooked. Most importantly, unlike the meatball marinara sub, the bread on this sandwich didn’t fall apart.
Also, while the sandwich did need more sauce (as I said before), the pork itself wasn’t terrible. If nothing else, it tasted like pork rather than some sort of mystery meat shaped like pork.
I also couldn’t argue with convenience when it came to this sandwich. All I had to do was open an end of the wrapper and throw it in the microwave for about 90 seconds. The plastic around the sandwich got a bit hot. But, it was a much shorter cook time than many of the other lunches we have made.
If you are looking for something that is quick to make and filling for lunch, I would recommend avoiding the meatball marinara subs but make sure to give the Great Value BBQ pork sandwiches a try.
