I had every intention of picking up a Papa Murphy’s pizza when I drove to the north side of town yesterday evening. But, before getting dinner, I first had to stop off at Walmart so I could pick up some cat food (he eats more than my kids do). Since I was already there and we had just had a (frozen) pizza a couple nights before, I decided to walk over to the grocery section to see if I could find something different to try instead (I figured, if I didn’t find something, I still had time to go to Papa Murphy’s).
At first, I thought I was going to strike out. I found a few items that looked appetizing. But, they were kind of expensive so I didn’t buy them. But, just as I was about to give up and leave, I saw a package of Great Value Chicken Alla Vodka and Farfalle.
To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t really sure what this dinner was when I decided to get it. I had never had anything in a vodka sauce before and couldn’t remember if I even liked asparagus (which was mixed in with it). But, the dinner for two was less than $5 and it would give me an excuse to make the dinner rolls I bought a couple weeks earlier so I bought it.
The Great Value dinner was easy to make. All I had to do was dump the contents of the bag into a skillet, cover and let it cook for about 10 minutes. I was able to make the dinner rolls and do up some dishes while it was cooking.
Unfortunately, other than the price and how easy it was to prepare, I honestly ended up being somewhat disappointed by it.
Because it came in a “vodka” sauce (I’m still not sure why it is considered a vodka sauce when the ingredients on the bag say it is made with white wine), I expected it to have a bit of a kick to it or, at very least, a taste that was noticeably different from other sauces. However, the sauce actually proved to be a bit bland and I couldn’t tell the difference between it or any other marinara sauce I have ever had.
I also wasn’t too thrilled about the quantity. It was a dinner for two so I wasn’t expecting leftovers from it. But, there was only enough in the bag for my wife and I to each have one serving; something that definitely would not have been enough if it weren’t for me making the dinner rolls (we each ended up eating three of those).
In addition, there really wasn’t much inside the bag other than pasta and sauce. We only found a few pieces of chicken and a few very tiny pieces of asparagus (which I discovered I actually like).
Because this is priced lower than the other skillet dinners I saw, I would recommend it if you are looking for a quick meal at an affordable price. But, if you are looking for a filling dinner for two that offers something special when it comes to taste, you will be disappointed by this.
