We had a pretty long day this past Friday (my wife and I got up early to go Black Friday shopping and my kids spent the night at their grandparents; which meant they were up by 6) and everyone was getting pretty tired. So, I decided to make an early dinner; just in case everyone was in bed early (it turns out my wife and kids were all in bed before 8).
I was trying to figure out what to make and remembered it was Friday so I made fish sticks for dinner. I wanted some sort of vegetable to go with them and, since I knew it was something both of my kids would eat, opened up a can of cream style corn from the brand Happy Harvest.
I have purchased quite a few canned vegetables from this brand in the past and, with very few exceptions, we have been happy with the quality we got, especially since it is an inexpensive brand.
Unfortunately, when it came to the cream corn, I felt like I had one of those few exceptions.
One of the first things I noticed about this brand was the color. I’m used to cream corn that is yellow in color; usually a lighter yellow. In the right light, this one appeared to be yellow. But, when eating it, it also looked like it was a bit gray in color. I wasn’t the only one who noticed this (my wife mentioned it while we were eating).
The second thing I noticed was how watery this corn was. When I have cream style corn, I expect it to be more cream like; in other words, thicker. This wasn’t even close to being right. Instead of cream style, it looked more like a bunch of ripped apart corn kernels in water. That, combined with the gray color, really didn’t make these all that appetizing.
For the most part, the corn didn’t taste too bad so I probably could have lived with what I said above; except for the fact the quantity was seriously lacking. I think this is because of the corn being so watery but, when we buy this product from other brands, one can is normally enough for all four of us. With this brand, I ended up having to open two cans.
If I had to choose between this and a much more expensive brand, I likely would buy this again. But, if I had another brand to choose from at roughly the same price, I probably would pick that brand instead.
