Jillian Michael’s is a well known trainer popular from her time with the show Biggest Loser. Jillian has branched out and released multiple DVD workout routines along with books and various other fitness products.
The first Jillian Michael’s product I purchased was her 30 day shred DVD. It is inexpensive, easy to find, and claims you can lose up to 20lbs in 30 Days. This was a claim I was unaware of when I first began looking to purchase the DVD and a claim that actually deters me from the product even though I own it. It makes it seem like every other lose weight quick fad when it should be viewed as a means to better your physical being instead of a quick fix.
Cons of the DVD:
I get very bored with it very easily
Not for people with joint problems (some modification could be done depending on the situation)
not the best option for apartment dwellers
Little guidance on how often to do the DVD
Pros of the DVD:
Promotes adapting your workout as you improve
will help your fitness level if you stick with it
The concept that this DVD is based on is doing each level, a total of three, individually for ten days then moving on to the next level for ten days, until you have completed each level for ten days making a grand total of thirty days. Each level is different and requires different demands on your body which can help promote change. There is some debate on whether the DVD is supposed to be done in 30 consecutive days or if there is supposed to be rest days. Ultimately I believe this depends on your lifestyle, fitness level, and dedication.
I have never completed a full 30 days of the 30 day shred DVD back to back. I get bored. I lose motivation. It ends up sitting and collecting dust when I try to shoot for the 30 day goal.
Please do not take this as a bad comment on the product. I like the workouts. I feel I get in a good workout in a short amount of time, after all it is just 20 minutes, and I know they can help improve my fitness level from my own personal experience with it doing so. It is a killer workout for all levels of fitness and can be adjusted to be easier or more difficult depending on the weight you use and how deep you go into the exercises.
My boredom with the product is due to my workout style and personality I cannot just do the same thing day in and day out. Some days I want to do a quick workout like the 30 day shred, others I want to hit the treadmill or just go for a walk with my dog. I like variety and the 30 day shred DVD can contribute to this as part of a workout rotation. In researching the 30 day shred system I found many success stories and believe it could provide many more success stories for future users. I recommend it to my friends and family that want to start workout or just need a change of pace in their current routine.
I feel that Jillian has created a DVD I can go back to after some time of not working out so that I can help jump start my fitness level and get back into shape. The time is manageable and not intimidating when you know you’re not in the best shape. If you put in the effort you will get results. What is most important is that you find something that motivates you to move!
