Even though Christmas is still too far away (in my opinion at least) for me to get in the holiday spirit just yet (I prefer to wait until after Thanksgiving), I am starting to notice some newer, holiday themed food items at some of our local grocery stores. And, since I am not a person who turns down the chance to try new foods (especially sweets), I am taking advantage of that.
I had another opportunity to do this last night, when I was at the store after work and came across a box of Little Debbie Peppermint Swiss Rolls. When I first saw this product, I thought it was interesting but, believing we had enough treats at home already, I decided not to buy it. However, I ended up having to return to that aisle for something and, when I saw them again and saw they were only $1.50; I decided to give them a try.
When I did buy these, I thought the concept was a no-brainer. I love Swiss rolls and buy them on a regular basis from a variety of brands. And, in the past, I have almost always enjoyed peppermint flavored treats. So, a product combining both of those really seemed like a no-lose concept.
Unfortunately, as I discovered when I tried my first one, I was wrong about this.
I will say, if you are looking for a chocolate fix, the chocolate on these rolls was as good as any other I have had. I didn’t know if that would be the case at first because it looked like a darker chocolate and, as I have said in the past, I’m not a big fan of dark chocolate. However, it had a sweet taste that wasn’t overly sweet.
What I didn’t like about these though was the peppermint. When I bought them, I thought they would have a hint of peppermint; like what you could expect when drinking hot chocolate with peppermint sprinkled in it. Instead, it was a very strong taste. As I told my wife, it would be a great treat if I was trying to clear my throat. But, other than that, it was too strong.
I also couldn’t help but be disappointed in the fact there were only six Swiss rolls in the box. I’m used to spending as much as I did and getting at least 12 (six packs of 2) so I did feel a bit like I didn’t get my money’s worth.
There are likely some people out there who would like this product. I, however, will likely not buy it again.
