After years of paying for expensive American cable TV in Thailand, I finally canceled it last month. No more CNN, Discovery Channel or HBO, I actually don’t miss it as my apartment building has free basic satellite TV, broadcast out of China, and it includes one of the best satellite movie channels in the world – Lotus TV Macau.
What is Lotus TV Macau? – Lotus TV Macau is a Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese TV channel that shows mainly movies, 24 hours a day. Yes, it comes out of Macau, part of the People’s Republic of China, and yes, in between each movie they do speak Chinese but almost every movie shown is an American, British or European movie and the variety of what they show is amazing.
What Types of Movies Play on Lotus TV Macau? – Unlike HBO and Cinemax, which show just a few movies 50 times during a month, Lotus TV Macau shows many movies but only a few times a month. They classify themselves as a ‘Classic Blockbuster’ movie network, basically meaning the movies shown are slightly older (usually between 1985 and today) and all are well known.
In just the last three days, I’ve watched ‘Heat‘, ‘Pride and Prejudice‘, ‘Sense and Sensibility‘, ‘The Hunt For Red October’, ‘The Lord of the Rings‘, ‘The Rock‘, ‘The Devil Wears Prada‘, ‘Outbreak‘, ‘Rain Man’, ‘Brazil’ and ‘12 Monkeys‘. Movies are all in English, with Chinese subtitles for the network’s mainly Chinese-speaking audience.
All back-to-back movies, with only five minutes of intermission in between and, of course for me, completely free.
What Else Does Lotus TV Macau Air? – Mostly showing movies, Lotus TV Macau also airs some cultural shows from China, Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most are in Chinese, but also have English subtitles, and feature everything from learning about the people of Macau, to art in Hong Kong and travel in China . As I love watching anything about Asia, I’m just about glued to Lotus TV Macau 18 hours a day, as there’s so much to watch.
There are also a few news shows each week. Some are completely in Mandarin or Cantonese, some with English subtitles, so there’s a good variety for everyone.
Where Does Lotus TV Macau Broadcast? – The satellite channel broadcasts mainly in Hong Kong, China and Macau but, of course, is picked up on other satellite systems throughout Asia. I’m in Thailand, and it comes in as clear as a bell, with only an occasional stutter lasting no more than a couple of seconds. You can also watch Lotus TV Macau on several internet websites that stream live TV.
Now I have Lotus TV Macau, as well as the BBC, Australian Network and several other English-language Asian channels for free, canceling my US cable was the best thing I ever did. Not only is it saving me $60 a month, but now I can watch more Asian-centric TV channels. Plus, with Lotus TV Macau, one of the best satellite TV movie channels in the world is appearing in my living room nightly, for free. I honestly couldn’t be happier.
