My wife said she went to the grocery store last night to pick up dinner and I naturally assumed she was either picking up some sort of frozen dinner or ingredients for a dish she has made before. So, I was very surprised when I came home and discovered she was making a homemade pizza instead.
Neither of us likes making pizza crust from dough so I wasn’t surprised to see she had purchased a pre-made crust from the brand Mama Mary’s. However, this was the first time we have purchased this brand and I know, from experience, there are plenty of brands of pre-made crust that just aren’t as good as others so I was a bit afraid the end result wouldn’t justify her efforts.
However, after trying the pizza, I do have to say this crust exceeded my expectations of it.
The nice thing about pre-made crust is you don’t have a great deal of prep work involved with it. And, that was the case with this brand. In fact, I think the fact she went with this crust cut about 15-20 minutes off the overall cooking time.
The biggest problem I have with most brands of pre-made pizza crust is the fact most are very dry tasting (like regular pizza crust tastes when it has been left out for a while); even if you add a lot of olive oil to them first. That was not a problem with this brand. In fact, I don’t think it was possible to tell the difference between this pre-made variety and a crust made fresh from dough.
Another thing I liked about this brand was the overall taste of the crust. The package said it was made with honey and I believe that because it had a sweet taste to it that you just don’t expect to have from pizza crust. It was actually more of a flavor you would expect to get from afresh baked bread that had a honey coating on it. This improved the overall flavor enough for me to forgive the fact she burned the bacon that was on it.
Unlike many thicker crusts, this one also did manage to get crisper than I was expecting it too. This was another pleasant surprise that only added to my overall enjoyment. It was nice eating a pizza with a lot of toppings and not having a soft crust bending from the weight every time we picked up a slice.
If you are looking to make a homemade pizza, this is a crust I would recommend.
