Canon is trying to take over the digital camera industry much like Apple’s iPhone is attempting to corner their niche market. The new Canon PowerShot S95 digital camera is compact like any small handheld camera except it is fully loaded. The camera retails for $400 and it has all of the latest things that tech junkies love.
Specs and Features
You can shoot high definition video that you can watch directly on your HDTV with a connecting HDMI cord. The camera has a zoom and wide angle feature in addition to 10 megapixels of memory. The PowerShot S95 is listed as a compact camera so Canon has truly made this worthy of a $400 camera.
More features include a 3-inch LCD view screen so you can capture that perfect shot. Other standard features include shot stability and sensor capability for shooting in low light.
My wife let me ogle at this camera at Best Buy when we were in town over the weekend. At first it took a little getting used to the button controls on the back of the camera. As you shift buttons, twist, twirl, and eventually the camera catches up to what you are doing. This camera is great for focusing in on a particular object or getting a panoramic family shot. We want this camera for our next vacation and birthday celebrations (hint: Christmas present for my wife).
Compatibility with our computers and television is very nice. You can download pictures very quickly to a laptop if you have one handy and then email them to whomever we wish. There is a USB port for easy downloading.
As with most point and shoot digital cameras there is some lag between pushing the button and capturing the shot. For still photos this camera is fantastic but don’t expect to get a hold of that perfect swing at the plate or kicking of a soccer ball. However I was pleased that there is a control for virtually every kind of shooting you can do. It takes a moment to adjust from close up to far away shots but so does every camera.
The price is actually a plus. Compared to other cameras with this much stuff on the shelves it’s at least a hundred dollars cheaper. As more and more camera companies line up to compete with Canon it will only drive the price down even more.
The only thing I wish this camera had is a feature that allows me to wireless download pictures to the Internet or my phone. That’s probably on models a few years from now since everything else is moving towards instant wireless connections.
The battery life isn’t the best on this camera either as it is a power hog. You may want to invest in an AC adapter for your car and an extra battery if you will be on long hikes or at the zoo all day. You will have plenty of memory for your shots but you may want to invest in extra memory card such as the 4 GB SD memory slot if you plan on going bonkers with picture taking. You can have any color you want for the Canon PowerShot S95 as long as it is black.
