Paranormal Activity absolutely scared the crap out of me. A lot of people were torn on it, some thinking it was terrifying and some thinking it was stupid, but I was definitely in the former category. But when I heard word of a sequel, I was not pleased. I definitely thought that despite the original director supporting it, this was just a cheap cash-in that would cheapen the first attempt. But when I saw the reviews it was getting, I was curious. What makes this sequel so good?
I must say that I was pleasantly surprised in some ways and disappointed in others. I was surprised in how well this was thought out – this is definitely not a cash-in plot, but rather one that very cleverly ties in the first movie and adds to it in so many ways. I’d go as far as to say that this plot is better than the one in the first movie, and definitely does it justice.
The point where I was disappointed was the point when I realized I wasn’t scared. There were a couple very freaky parts and jump moments for sure, but I definitely wasn’t as affected by this movie as I was the first. And why? Because they use a lot of the same tricks over again. There is some very clever use of a dog and a baby, but this doesn’t add to the dread as much as I felt like it should. But again, this movie will tear people just like the first one did. My roommate wasn’t at all scared by the first one and was nearly crying by the time this one was through, so whether you like, love or hate Paranormal Activity 2 totally depends on you. I’d say if you like the first one, go ahead and see this one. If you haven’t seen the first one, see it first because this one adds to it in a lot of important ways. Definitely worth seeing in my opinion, despite the fact that the first one padded the fear a bit for me.
