Synopsis of the Children’s Alphabet Book V is for von Trapp
The 32 page book uses letters of the alphabet to highlight words which tell the story of the Austrian family that inspired The Sound of Music. Each letter of the alphabet is given one or two pages and words such as “a” for Austria, “h” for hiking, “r” for recorders, “y” for yodel, etc., are introduced with a rhyming poem and with informative paragraphs that expound on each term. Readers will learn about the von Trapp family’s uniqueness, including how the father, known as “Papa”, used his Navy whistle to summon his children, with each one of the kids having a different whistling code. Additionally, the reasons for the singing and hiking family leaving their beloved Austria for America is covered, as well as how a special location in the state of Vermont became not only the von Trapp’s adopted home, but also serves as a popular vacation destination for travelers, especially in wintertime.
I recommend this children’s book about The Sound of Music because it’s a great way to introduce kids to this amazing musical family, who touched the world with their performing and close family ties. The nicely-detailed illustrations by Linda Dockey Graves have a folksy and alpine aura to them, plus give off a real “warm family feel” to the eyes.
