I recently wrote an article explaining my experience while getting ready to start school online at University of Phoenix. Please check my other articles if you haven’t read this one. It’s great for people wanting to get an education online.
So now I’m 10 weeks in at my online school at University of Phoenix. Classes here last 9 weeks and you take 2 classes at a time. My first two classes that I took were, Intro to Health and Wellness and Intro to University Studies.
Both Classes were a great way to get introduced to the online learning environment. The Intro to Health and Wellness really opened my eyes on proper dieting, weight loss, drug abuse and addiction and illness like cancer, diabetes, and heart conditions.
The Intro to University Studies was an extremely helpful class for a first time college student. This class helps to prepare you for how to learn in college, how to study, how to create a schedule, and how to set goals for meeting and completing your obligations.
The class set up is really easy to navigate. It’s been designed so that even people who aren’t really good on computers can find their way around really easy and keep up with the class.
The classes themselves work as follows. You log in to the student website with your log-in credentials. Once you’re logged in, the home screen will open and display your two classes that you’re enrolled in at the time. You will click on one of the classes and allow it to open up. Once you’re inside your ‘classroom’, you’ll have several tabs at the top of the page that are named, Materials, Discussion, and Assignments.
The Materials section will show you all of your reading materials. They will be separated into each week. Your text books can be downloaded and saved to your computer in PDF format. This is also where additional readings and activities will be located.
The Discussion section is where you log into the classroom to participate in the required class room discussions so that you’ll get your participation points. You can also speak with the teacher privately in your personal forum about any issues that you’re having. In this section you’ll see that the teachers post discussion questions in the Main Forum. They will look like Week 1- DQ1. The requirements for the class are that you answer at least 4 out of the 5 that will be posted, on 4 separate days. In addition to the discussion questions, you’ll also be required to participate in 2 additional discussions. This can be done by responding to other students post to the DQ’s, or by answering additional questions that the teacher may post.
The Assignments section is where you’ll go to upload your weekly assignment. It will have the name of the assignment (which can be located under the Materials section) that you are required to submit. You’ll do this by clicking browse, and locating the correct file that you have saved on your computer.
Of course there is more available on the student website such as a vast library, continuing education tutorials, Writing Labs, Math evaluation labs and so much more. If anyone is thinking about going to school online, I have to recommend that this school be University of Phoenix. I can’t say enough good things about it.
For those of you who may be questioning the idea of an education online through University of Phoenix, I can say that it is legit. You’ll get an actual Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or even a PhD on whatever subject you choose. I’m personally going for my Masters in Information Systems. I’m currently working on my Associates of Arts in Information Technology/Programming. I will continue to pursue my Bachelors of Science in Software Engineering and then as stated, on to my Masters.
